Gastric banding is a type of weight-loss surgery. Weight-loss surgery is also called bariatric surgery. It's done as a laparoscopic surgery, with small incisions in the upper abdomen. The surgeon puts an adjustable band around the top part of the stomach. This creates a very small stomach pouch. The small stomach pouch means that you'll feel full after eating less food. This will help you lose weight.

Gastric Band Surgery Overview

Gastric banding, also known as bariatric surgery, is a type of weight-loss surgery performed laparoscopically with small incisions in the upper abdomen. During this procedure, an adjustable band is placed around the top part of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch. This results in feeling full after consuming less food, aiding in weight loss. While bariatric surgery offers benefits, it's crucial to acknowledge the serious risks and side effects associated with all forms of weight-loss surgery. In addition, it is necessary to make permanent healthy dietary changes and engage in regular exercise to ensure the long-term success of bariatric surgery.

Treatment Procedure

The treatment involves placing an implant, which is a soft silicone ring with an expandable balloon at the center, around the top portion of the stomach. This creates a double-compartment stomach, where the individual eats enough to fill the upper part of the stomach. Food then passes through the band opening into the lower stomach for digestion. The band is connected to an injection port beneath the skin via tubing, permitting adjustment of the band's tightness by inflating or deflating the balloon. Adjustment is easily done in the office with no special preparation needed. Adding saline to the band reduces the gap between the stomach sections, slowing food passage, whereas removing saline allows quicker food transfer.

Outcome & Recovery

The recovery duration varies based on the patient, procedure, and severity.

Success Rate

The success rate depends on various factors such as the condition stage, patient's age, and complexity of the procedure.
