Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a medical procedure used to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus. It is typically performed by specialists to diagnose and treat various uterine conditions, such as heavy bleeding, or to clear the uterine lining following a miscarriage or abortion.

Overview
In a dilation and curettage (D&C), your doctor uses small instruments or medication to dilate (open) your cervix, the lower, narrow part of your uterus. Then, a surgical instrument called a curette is used to remove uterine tissue. Curettes used in a D&C can be sharp or utilize suction.
Symptoms
Symptoms of the condition depend on its severity and can include:
- A miscarriage
- Residual tissue in the uterus after an abortion
- Unexplained bleeding between menstrual periods
Causes
Healthcare providers perform dilation and curettage to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions such as heavy bleeding or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion.
When to seek medical attention
A D&C may be used as a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure for abnormal bleeding. It may also be performed to determine the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, detect cancer, or investigate infertility.
Risk Factors
The risk factors of the condition include infection, excessive bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, and damage to pelvic structures during surgery.
Diagnosis and Tests
Diagnostic tests for D&C include hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy.
Treatment Procedure
During a therapeutic D&C, your doctor removes the contents from inside your uterus to treat various conditions such as preventing infection or heavy bleeding after miscarriage, removing a molar pregnancy, treating excessive bleeding after delivery, or removing cervical or uterine polyps.
Outcome & Recovery
The recovery time depends on the patient, procedure, and severity of the condition.
Success Rate
The success rate varies depending on factors such as the stage of the condition, the age of the patient, and complications.
Do's & Don't
Do:
- Wash the stitched-up area once the dressing has been removed
- Dry the stitched-up area adequately to prevent moisture buildup
- Watch for signs of infection such as fever, redness, swelling, and wound discharge
- Pick breathable, airy clothes to allow the wound area to heal
Don't:
- Consume saturated fats
- Lift heavy weights, which could increase the risk of hernia
- Revert to pre-procedure exercise routine immediately
